xinshengproject🇾🇪For centuries, Yemen has struggled for independence, unity, and sovereignty under colonial domination and partition. It has resisted US, UK, Saudi, and Emirati attempts to divide, exploit, and subjugate its people. XSP condemns the recent US-led coalition bombing of Yemen. As an initial response to the disinformation about Yemen, the AnsarAllah, and the partial blockade of the Red Sea, we wanted to provide some helpful context for those in our audience who may not know where to begin. We will continue to monitor disinformation narratives on Yemen and strengthen our own analysis through ongoing political education efforts, which we hope to share in future posts. xinshengprojectThe #StopAsianHate movement brought violence against Asians into mainstream focus. However, in its rise to mainstream discourse, Stop Asian Hate propagated carceral rhetoric and anti-Black stereotypes, like the trope of Black criminality. Ultimately, it has worked to distance Asian American politics from the Black struggle. In this post, we highlight some of the ways that Stop Asian Hate has failed to transcend into a collective, coalitional, and united movement against racial violence. It is the duty of non-Black Asians to recognize and oppose anti-Blackness in our communities. Diaspora movements to end violence against Asians cannot be built upon separation from our homelands and Black communities. Our strategy must reflect the interconnectedness of our struggles and reject carceral solutions to racial violence. Alt text will be posted in the comments. xinshengprojectAs we grieve the most recent mass shooting in Half Moon Bay, California, we cannot forget the systemic violence driving interpersonal violence in our communities. The victims of the Half Moon Bay shooting were working-class migrant farmers, leading some to speculate that the shooting was an act of workplace violence. Their identities as migrant farmworkers contextualizes this mass shooting in our capitalist, imperialist, white supremacist labor system that exploits migrant workers. In solidarity with the Half Moon Bay farmworkers’ demands for better working and living conditions, we call for non-carceral, structural changes beyond the limited frameworks of “toxic masculinity” and “gun control.” To prevent these tragedies from happening in the first place, we must prioritize changes to the material conditions that shape the lives of migrant farmworkers. xinshengprojectAccessibility in online organizing spaces is often viewed as an afterthought or a footnote. However, accessibility is the bare minimum that can be done to respect the needs of the members of your organization. When we are denied access to information, we are also denied access to the community, to connection, to being part of the conversation, and to power itself. • We must thus encourage our communities and orgs to become more accessible and to think more deeply about disability every day. Accessibility is collective, and it is a collective responsibility. As per #AccessIsLove, accessibility is not just about concrete steps of action, but rather, it is a deeper understanding of our shared humanity and dignity, growing access intimacy, and an opportunity to create more justice and love in our world. • We want to expand our understanding of what “access” means, and to think about how we can create a world where all kinds of accessibility are centered and valued. The Xin Sheng Project reflects on accessibility in online organizing and gives concrete suggestions on aligning our orgs and our thinking with the principles of disability justice. • These slides were adapted from the Xin Sheng Project’s Disability + Ableism in Online Organizing Workshop presented in August, 2021, in collaboration with the @caukieucollective.] Slide text and IDs in comments. — Design: @janexfan Teach in: @jiji.w.wong and @dtcguo -- [#DisabilityJustice #Accessibility #OnlineOrganizing #Ableism #AccessIsLove #CollectiveCare] #XinShengProject #disinformation #AAPI #ChineseAmerican #ChineseDiaspora

xinshengprojectOne of the difficulties faced by diaspora when speaking with elders in our mother tongues is translational difficulties. Click on the link in our bio to read our newest article on how translations can affect how we talk about social issues! Written by: Stephanie Lu Design by: @jguicoo — Alt text available. — [Image description] All slides have a background that features a yellow triangle spread across the bottom left and a light blue triangle spread across the top right. A double-lined, dark blue border outlines the entire graphic. The middle section contains a dark blue rectangular shape, with each corner edge carved out. Slide 1: White text on top of the dark blue shape states: Translational Distortions of the Term “Critical Race Theory” Slide 2: White text on top of the dark blue shape states: The quasi-official Chinese translation of “critical race theory” is “批判性種族理論.” Although “性種族理論” does capture the idea of “race theory,” the first part—”批判”—does not capture “critical” as an English speaker would understand it in “critical race theory.” Slide 3: White text on top of the dark blue shape states: We can use critical race theory to examine phenomena by considering how ideas about race are created and applied. This does not mean using critical race theory leads to pointing fingers and calling names. Slide 4: White text on top of the dark blue shape states: In fact, the purpose of critical race theory is not to criticize or praise specific racial groups. The term “critical” in “critical race theory” is used in the same way that an English teacher talks about “critical reading”—as entailing deep analysis from every angle. xinshengprojectAs an alum of the University of Chicago, news of Shaoxiong “Dennis” Zheng’s tragic death hit me hard. I could visualize the street where the tragedy happened; I could imagine the ambulance route to the hospital; and I could reflect on the painful history of the relationship between the University and the Southside of Chicago where it calls home. It’s been incredibly painful to watch the majority of responses in the aftermath of the tragedy center on police and carceral responses. Little of the narrative is focused on true justice and healing. Little of the narrative talks about healing the pain for Shaoxiong’s family and community, the pain for Alton’s family and community, the pain for the Chicago southside community and the UChicago community, and the collective pain among all of us impacted by systemic oppression and violence. This article explores the larger context surrounding this tragedy and affirms that we must center healing and transformative justice because we all deserve safety and community. xinshengprojectCW: misogyny, racism, sexual violence   6 Asian women working in Atlanta-area massage parlors were killed by a white man on March 16, 2021. The police supported his claim that the killings were “not racially motivated” but rather a way for the shooter to “eliminate [his sexual] temptations.”    The shooter’s “temptations” stem from the fetishization of Asian women and misogyny-affected individuals — a violent result of Western imperialism in Asia. xinshengprojectThe majority of curricula taught in U.S. history classes is based on a white-centered narrative. This narrative focuses on the settler colonial origin of the United States and erases the stories of Indigenous communities and other non-white communities. For many BIPOC students going through school, it is really difficult to find ourselves in our textbooks and this is detrimental for the formation of our identity, belonging, and sense of self. This was why students in the 1960’s faced violence and brutality in order to protest and fight for a curriculum that reflected the history and experiences of BIPOC people. They demanded ethnic studies on college campuses in San Francisco and Berkeley. Ethnic studies is dedicated to understanding the collective struggles and triumphs of marginalized communities in the United States, including Black, Asian, Latine, and Indigenous Peoples. Ethnic studies teaches theories of racial formation and seeks to understand how other identities, such as gender and sexuality, intersect with racialization. Fast forward to October this year, California became the first state to make ethnic studies a high school graduation requirement. Ethnic studies has taught me the kind of history that I needed to know in order to know and love myself. I am filled with hope knowing that our Chinese children of the diaspora growing up today will have more access to the kind of identity-affirming education that they deserve, and that they will have more opportunities to know and love themselves. xinshengprojectWe frequently talk about increasing AAPI representation in government, but a mere Asian face is not enough. Of all the Asian Americans who have run for office, successfully or not, Michelle Wu is the first one that I feel is truly representative of me. It’s not just because she is Asian. It is because of her platform, full of progressive policies from rent stabilization to universal early education. xinshengprojectThe fairness of the admissions system to specialized and other elite high schools in New York City has long been in question due to the decline in the enrollment of Black, Latine, and low-income students. Admission to these nine schools is based on a student’s score on a single entrance test—8 out of the 9 specialized high schools require that students take the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) in the fall of eighth grade. Intentions to eliminate the SHSAT as the determining factor of admission have sparked much dissent, specifically within the Asian American community. Swipe to read about how education inequity also affects Asian American students, and why we support reform. Link in bio for full article in English and both simplified & traditional Chinese. xinshengprojectWhile viral videos and headlines emphasize specific hate incidents of Asian Americans being attacked, they miss the root of the issue: anti-Asian violence is not individualistic, but systemic. These systemic problems not only impact our community, but also other marginalized groups. How can we ensure that our activism extends beyond the 10 seconds we see on social media, and that our activism is intersectional? Read our latest article (in English and Chinese) and share it on WeChat with your aunties and uncles! Link in bio.

xinshengprojectWe need to include class analysis in our discussion of anti-Asian violence! Many are quick to point out that some of our most vulnerable community members are elderly and women, but neglect to address the poverty the victims of violence face. As it becomes clear low-income communities are most at risk, we must acknowledge and address the class issues that put them in this vulnerable position. Read our latest article (in Chinese and English) and share it with your aunties and uncles on WeChat!

xinshengprojectIn the past 30 days, even more people have died at the hands of police, many with little to no media coverage: Travon Chadwell, Anthony Alverez, Iremamber Sykap, Jaida Peterson, Lindani Myeni, Dominique Luscious, Miles Jackson, Matthew Zadock Williams, Anthony Thompson Jr., Peyton Ham, Mario Gonzalez, Adam Toledo, Andrew Brown Jr., Ma’Khia Bryant, and Daunte Wright, among others. Meanwhile, juxtaposing the grief and mourning of the many lives prematurely cut short, was the celebration on April 21st of Derek Chauvin being convicted on all three counts he was charged with. The verdict has been held up by some people as an example that police actually can be held accountable and therefore abolition is not needed, only reform. There is no way to hold police accountable in the system built to protect them, never mind serving justice. Justice would be no more lives lost from policing whatsoever. It is becoming more and more apparent that justice cannot be had without abolition. ✏️ Written by @jiji.w.wong

xinshengprojectHappy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! The Model Minority Myth is a sociopolitical theory which argues that Asians are superior to other people of color, and therefore have been able to, through their inherently higher intelligence and work ethic achieve great success and positions of power over others, especially Black people. This myth sparks division among communities of color, and establishes a hierarchy among people that are not White in which Asians are represented at the top. By pitting people of color against each other, the myth harms the prospect of liberation for all. Kicking off a series on the myth is an introduction to what it is. Throughout May, the rest of the series will also break down why it is false and the harm it does to both Black and Asian communities. ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ This is a collaboration between our writers @sunnie.with.a.chance and @jiji.w.wong, and @theangryblackboy. xinshengprojectRacial Triangulation theory is a sociopolitical ideal which dictates that different racial and ethnic groups, primarily in America, occupy different group positions relative to each, resulting in unique experiences of members of these group along racial lines, specifically, Black people while deemed inferior to Asian and Latine people, are seen as less foreign than both of these groups. In light of BIPOC solidarity, many people have seen advocacy and standing up for marginalized groups outside of their own as transactional. Intersectional identities and different aspects of oppression are often misunderstood, especially when it comes to racial dynamics. By understanding the nuance of different aspects of race in America, we will better be able to stand against white supremacy, united in solidarity. xinshengprojectThe Model Minority Myth, in addition to being based on fallacious reasoning and serving as a tool weaponized against other communities of color, especially Black people, also harms Asians, the very group the myth was created to promote. In addition to placing a burden on Asians to live up to the expectations prescribed in the myth, the Model Minority erases the great diversity and struggles within the Asian diaspora, and reinforces capitalism.
